Whitney F asked:

I have two aluminum pizza pans that had some spots of mildew/bacteria on them when they were pulled out of storage. I tried to wash/scrub them in scalding hot water with an anti-bacterial dishdetergent, however within an hour the spots were back.

I have friends who say I should try using Bleach, but I don’t know….Yes, I have other pizza pans, but I would like to salvage these as the style can’t be found in stores anymore.

Try scrubbing them with a comet cleanser and a scrub pad…it has just enough bleach in it to remove the mildew and mold but not enough to ruin the aluminum… mamapoulette

Sure. Just make sure you wash it clean of all the bleach. JConly

Bleach will turn the aluminum black. Hot soapy water along with a souring pad should do it & then let them airdry in the sun. mountainbird51

If you pay attention to the pans at the best pizza restaurants, it is rare that you see any shiny ones. Most of the time, they have turned dark colored.

Don’t worry about it. DO NOT USE BLEACH on the pans. Not a good idea. Try scouring powder if you must shine them up. To say the least, they will continue to be a good product with or without the spots. P J

I’ve done it before when I pulled some aluminum baking sheets out of storage. I used Clorox bleach spray and it came right off, and my baking sheets are fine. I would only keep the bleach on there for a few minutes…just long enough to break up the mildew. I don’t know if you have a special finish on your pizza sheets so I would just be careful, or maybe use a mixture of half bleach and half water. Jen

I would not use full strength bleach, for bleach will eat metal. Once you wash mold off, it can’t come back immediately after washing. Are you sure it’s just not from aging and grease buildup. I have an aluminum pizza pan and the whole thing is just about all brown from spraying with non-stick sprays and then baking in the oven. And there is no getting that stuff off. I’m sure what you are seeing is baked in grease. But bleach won’t get that off either. I even have very old aluminum cookie sheets the same way. Buddy

try using borax or baking soda. just make a paste by adding some water and scrub the spots. moti1219

I would defintely try borax. It is a great non-toxic alternative. It removes mold, inhibits the growth of new mold, is a stain remover, cleaner, and disinfectant. Mix a little borax, water and your dish soap. hrtonfire

You should not. Use Brillo steel wool with or without oxygen boost. Get the pan and pad wet and use elbow grease. It will shine the pans and should get rid of the problem. ( I have used aluminum pans for over 25 years.) sam
